Hunters, fishermen risk fines
simply crossing tracks
The railroads serving the Coulee Region are being asked to let hunters and fishermen cross tracks in open areas that are far between legal crossings.
Right now, they risk trespassing charges and fines if they cross tracks to get to hunting areas or fishing spots.
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker vetoed a repeal of the rail trespassing law in Wisconsin last year, citing public safety as a major concern.
Congressmen Ron Kind of Wisconsin and Tim Walz of Minnesota have heard the sportsmen’s frustration and have signed letters sent to leaders of BNSF and Canadian Pacific.
The letters ask the companies to consider changing these trespassing laws, increase the number of crossings or, at least, work on a compromise.
