Caledonia’s Gran scores 4 TDs; Winona High goes for 2 for win

The Central High School football team made it interesting. Ultimately, however, it was Aquinas holding on to a 27-20 victory at Veterans Memorial Field.

The Red Raiders scored back-to-back touchdowns late in the third and in the fourth quarter to pull within seven. Driving with just over a minute to go for the tie, Central quarterback Matt Johnson kept a triple-option for 27-yard gain down to Aquinas’ 14 yard line.

On the next play, however, the Red Raiders (0-5, 0-3 MVC) fumbled, the Blugolds (3-2, 1-2) recovered and that was the game.

Johnson finished with 127 yards, three touchdowns on 21 carries, while Tyler Young had 71 yards on 15 carries and two scores for Aquinas. Young also threw for 149 yards and a touchdown, going 11-for-20.

HOLMEN 40, WEST SALEM 26

HOLMEN, Wis. – Kyle Koelbl took the first play from scrimmage 80 yards for the touchdown and that set the tone for Holmen. Koelbl finished with 166 yards on just seven carries – four of those for touchdown runs of 19, 21, 24 and, of course 80 yards.

Koelbl didn’t even lead the Vikings (4-1, 3-0) in rushing, though. That honor went to Seth Wilson, who had 174 yards on 25 carries.

Timothy Schauf had 19 carries for 149 yards and a score. He also was 8-for-20 for 154 yards in the air, including a touchdown and an interception for West Salem (1-3, 0-3).

LOGAN 20, TOMAH 12

TOMAH, Wis. – Manny Buckhanan had 32 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown in leading Logan (4-1, 3-0). Tomah (2-3, 1-2) scored first on a Josh Peardot 8-yard touchdown run, but Logan scored 20 unanswered to pull away.

ONALASKA 44, SPARTA 14

SPARTA, Wis. – Brayton Duin was just 6-for-13 for 94 yards, but four of those completions were touchdowns – two to Jalen Sample for 7 and 40 yards for Onalaska (4-1, 3-0). Jacob Edwards led Sparta (1-4, 1-2) with 104 yards on 19 carries.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Tanner Gran had back-to-back touchdown receptions of 19 and 50 yards, and then scored back-to-back punt returns of 51 and 62 yards for Caledonia, which shutout Zumbrota-Mazeppa 55-0. Teammate Sam Stemper had 90 yards and three touchdown runs on just nine carries for the Warriors, who scored all their points in the first half.
  • P.J. Appicelli threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns, but it was his two-point conversion to Kale Milek that ultimately gave Winona a 22-21 lead with just 1:14 remaining on the clock and ultimately the victory. Appicelli set up that conversion – the Winhawks elected to go for two over kicking extra points as they had done the previous touchdowns – with a 4-yard touchdown to Josh Bade.
  • Travis Hofslien needed just 10 carries to gain 126 yards and score two touchdowns in leading Westby to a 46-7 win over Onalaska Luther.
  • Andrew Piske had 173 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries in leading Bangor to a 46-0 win over Cashton.
  • It only took 11 carries for Trevor Heit to amass 187 yards, three touchdowns on the ground in leading Pepin/Alma to a 46-0 win over Lake Holcombe.
  • Ryan Wolfe had 225 yards, three touchdowns on 33 carries to help give Wabasha-Kellogg a 30-6 win over Hayfield.
